The case method

 

The case method is a true critical business scenario simulator that draws from real-world challenges faced by actual companies. At IAE, case studies describe business situations at the time a decision must be made, with problems depicted with limited information –as usually happens in reality.

Class participants must play the role of the executives portrayed, analyzing the situation to make an educated decision and to elaborate an action plan that they will need to explain and support in class. In a nutshell, there may be more than one adequate decision, but the decision-making process must be rigorous.

Step 1 –Individual study

First, students analyze cases individually to identify underlying issues, exploring facts, envisioning options and choosing a recommendation based on case-specific criteria.

Step 2 –Group debate

Then, small teams specially built with class participants from diverse backgrounds discuss case specifics in a fluent exchange of knowledge and experience.

 Step 3 –Class discussion

Finally, in general sessions, guided by class instructors, students weigh the pros and cons of each possible option, discovering theoretical frameworks and developing the best courses of action. 

Using the case method enables class participants to acquire decision-making skills, as it encourages intense interactions among professionals who bring their diverse expertise to case discussions.

Assessment

Student performance evaluations combine scientific demands –knowledge- with criteria used by companies to assess executives’ performance –skills. On a quarterly basis, students are graded according to their contributions in class, their elaboration on new ideas, and their ability to make decisions.

These evaluations are added to written reports and periodical exams. When a student fails to meet performance expectations in two consecutive quarters, he/she must quit the program. Participants are also required to attend at least 80% of classes in every academic area.
